COUNSELLING & PSYCHOTHERAPY

At the heart of all counselling and psychotherapy is our human suffering and an understanding of how this might be helped. Psychotherapy literally means to 'nurse the soul' deriving its name from the ancient Greeks and their understanding of human nature and the psyche. It is a way of reducing confusion or facilitating choice or change. Therapy can provide a safe place in which you can be offered the opportunity to feel understood, express feelings and begin to heal and move on.

My main training includes integrative counselling, counselling psychology and transpersonal psychotherapy. These have enabled me to interweave psychological concepts, theories and methods.

I have undertaken additional training including brief therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), cognitive analytic therapy (CAT), couple work, counselling children and teenagers, stress management, trauma, bereavement, dream work and transpersonal psychology. I use traditional talking therapy, together with creative arts therapies such as painting, drawing, writing, imagery and dream work.

I have been in practice since 1987 and worked in a variety of settings - NHS, private practice and for an Employee Assist Provider (EAP). I have seen people with many different concerns including depression, anxiety, abuse, stress and post traumatic stress, eating disorders, self harm, serious illness, relationship concerns, employment concerns, bereavement and loss. I have worked extensively with people with cancer and life limiting illness, loss and bereavement.

I work with you to consider your motivational and interpersonal influences and ways of thinking in order to contemplate and enable the developments and changes you hope for. I facilitate therapeutic work in a confidential way which is respectful of your values, ideology and choices.

I offer brief and longer term therapy to individuals (including older children and teenagers) and couples. You can refer yourself, be referred by your GP or employer. I work in the NHS and privately for Sussex Police and a number of Employee Assist Providers (EAPs) as an affiliate counsellor.

During our first session I usually ask you for some details about your life, personal history and what you would like from therapy to ensure I am an appropriate person for you to see and to consider how we could work together. If you might benefit from seeing a different therapist or another specialist I will discuss this with you.

Therapy takes place at agreed intervals, for a specific length of time and number of sessions or we can have an open-ended agreement.

Before your therapy starts, I will clarify with you the basis, method, duration and fees.

I abide by the codes of ethics of the UK Council for Psychotherapy, the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, the Centre for Transpersonal Psychology and the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council.

My consulting rooms are in Burgess Hill and Brighton.
